Step 5

Down in the pit of every addict’s soul
There lives a demon burning to be free
The beast will take you where you shouldn’t go
And make you what no man would wish to be
Who stands between yourself and your desire
You’ll lie or scam or bulldoze from your way
‘Till all you own is fed into the fire
You’ll owe the devil debts you cannot pay
If once you loved, it now is just a word
Your conscience, heart and spirit all are gone
When all you once believed now seems absurd
You’ll pray that you won’t see another dawn
And in that dark before the sun breaks through
There ain’t too much worth saving left in you.
